Verify an Absa bank statement PDF
An Absa statement has landed in your inbox as part of an application. Check whether the PDF shows signs of editing the eye cannot see before you rely on it. The same checks run on every PDF, whichever bank issued it.
How Absa clients get and send a statement
Many Absa clients receive their statements as eStatements: a PDF sent by email. Clients register for them through Absa Online Banking, Cellphone Banking or at a branch. Absa says the eStatement is password-protected and can be opened with Striata Reader or Adobe Reader.
Absa clients can also download and print a stamped statement from Absa Online Banking or at an Absa ATM, without visiting a branch. Absa lists organisations that accept stamped statements, among them SARS, MultiChoice and Telkom.
So an Absa statement can reach you in two shapes: a monthly eStatement forwarded from the applicant’s inbox, or a stamped statement downloaded for the purpose. Either way, ask for the PDF itself, not a printout that has been scanned or photographed.
The Absa eStatement is password-protected. What now?
- Absa tells its clients to read the cover letter of the email to know which password to use. The password is the applicant’s business, and you do not need it to have the statement checked.
- A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be checked here. Forwarding the eStatement as it arrived will not work.
- Do not ask the applicant to remove the password or re-save the file for you: a re-saved copy is no longer the file Absa produced. Ask them for a fresh copy downloaded from Absa Online Banking that opens without a password, such as a stamped statement.
- Never ask for Absa Online Banking login details, a PIN or a one-time password. You need the statement, and only the statement.
Why an Absa statement can look right and still be wrong
Most people who check a statement by hand look for the obvious: a wrong logo, a spelling mistake, a balance that does not add up. An edited PDF usually has none of these. The page looks the way an Absa statement should look, because most of it is exactly what Absa produced.
The part that was changed may be a single figure. Reading cannot find it. A file check can show signs of editing the eye cannot see, and gives you something firmer than a feeling to put in the file.
Absa’s stamped statement and a file check
An Absa stamped statement tells you the statement was produced through Absa’s own channels for an official purpose. It is the version to ask for when you need a statement you can rely on, and many organisations accept it.
We found no public Absa service that lets a third party look up a statement. A stamp shows where the statement came from. It does not show whether the PDF in front of you was changed after it left the bank. A file check looks at that second question.
Atomara is not connected to Absa and cannot see Absa’s records, so a clean result never confirms that Absa issued a statement. If something in the file worries you, contact Absa or ask the applicant for a fresh stamped statement.
Check the PDF you were sent
Upload the file exactly as you received it. The result appears on screen in seconds, and your first 3 checks are free once you confirm your email.
Sent a proof of payment rather than a statement? Check it before you release the goods.
Absa statements: questions
Can I upload an Absa eStatement exactly as it arrived by email?
Not if it asks for a password when it opens. Absa eStatements are password-protected, and a file that needs a password to open cannot be checked. Ask the applicant for a copy that opens without a password.
Should I ask the applicant for their eStatement password?
You do not need it for a check. Absa explains the password to its own client in the covering email, and a file that needs it cannot be checked anyway. Ask for a fresh copy from Absa Online Banking that opens without a password. If you must read a protected copy, get the password through a separate channel, never in the same message as the file.
Is a stamped Absa statement proof that the figures are genuine?
A stamp shows the statement came from Absa’s channels. It does not show whether the PDF was changed afterwards. That is what a file check looks at, and you can use both.
Does Atomara know what an Absa statement should look like?
No. Atomara holds no bank templates and is not connected to Absa. The same checks run on every PDF, whichever bank issued it.
Who checks these statements
Atomara is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Absa Bank. The name Absa is used only to describe the format of the document.
