Verify a Capitec bank statement PDF
An applicant has sent you a Capitec statement as a PDF. Before you rely on it, check whether the file shows signs of editing the eye cannot see. The same checks run on every PDF, whichever bank issued it, and the report appears on screen in seconds.
How Capitec clients get and send a statement
Capitec clients get their statements in the Capitec app or through online banking. Capitec’s help centre also explains how to email statements from your phone, so the file you receive has often come straight from the app to the applicant’s inbox, and then on to you by email or WhatsApp.
Capitec places a SkyQR code in the top-right corner of its bank statements, proofs of account and proofs of payment. That code matters later on this page: it is how Capitec lets a third party compare a document with the bank’s own record.
Ask for the PDF itself. A screenshot, a photo of a printed page or a scan cannot be compared with anything, and a screenshot cannot be uploaded here at all. A PDF that was saved from the app and forwarded unchanged is the file you want in front of you.
If the Capitec PDF asks for a password
- We do not publish a rule for Capitec statement passwords, because Capitec does not state one on a page we could verify. If the file came by email, the bank’s covering email or Capitec’s help centre explains the password.
- A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be checked here. A PDF that opens without a password is checked normally, even if it is locked against printing or copying.
- Do not ask the applicant to remove the password for you. Ask them to download the statement again from the Capitec app or online banking and send you a copy that opens without a password.
- Never ask for the applicant’s app PIN, online banking login or one-time PIN. You need the statement file, nothing else.
Why reading a Capitec statement closely is not enough
A Capitec statement has a familiar look, and that familiarity is the problem. On screen, a changed figure looks exactly like the figures around it. Nothing on the page draws your eye to it.
Adding up the running balance proves only that the sums add up. A file check looks at the PDF itself and shows signs of editing the eye cannot see. It does not read the numbers for you, and it is not a substitute for your own judgement about the applicant.
Capitec’s SkyQR check and a file check do different jobs
Capitec offers its own check. The recipient scans the SkyQR code in the top-right corner of the document with the SkyQR app, and the details of the original document are shown for comparison. Capitec says checking a proof of account or a proof of payment is free, and that validating a bank statement carries a fee. See Capitec: verify documents with SkyQR for the current terms.
The QR check answers one question: did Capitec issue a document with these details? It is the right first step, and nothing on this page replaces it. In March 2026 MyBroadband reported a bond originator’s account of a Capitec statement whose QR code did not exist in the bank’s system (as of 18/03/2026).
A file check answers a different question: does this PDF, the one you were actually sent, show signs of editing? It works on the file alone. Atomara is not connected to Capitec, does not see Capitec’s records and cannot confirm who issued a statement. Used together, the two checks cover both the bank’s record and the file in front of you.
Check the PDF you were sent
Upload the file exactly as you received it. The result appears on screen in seconds, and your first 3 checks are free once you confirm your email.
Sent a proof of payment rather than a statement? Check it before you release the goods.
Capitec statements: questions
If I scan the SkyQR code, do I still need a file check?
They answer different questions. SkyQR compares the document with Capitec’s record. A file check looks at whether the PDF you received shows signs of editing. If you can do both, do both. If a statement has no working QR code, that is a reason to ask Capitec, not a reason to trust the file.
Does Atomara use a Capitec template?
No. Atomara holds no bank templates and is not connected to Capitec. The same checks run on every PDF, whichever bank issued it. The name Capitec on this page only describes the document.
The applicant sent a screenshot of the Capitec app. Can I check it?
No. Only PDF files up to 10 MB can be uploaded. Ask for the statement PDF from the app or online banking. A scan or photo saved as a PDF gets a report without a score, because a picture cannot show which document it was taken from.
What does a clean result mean for a Capitec statement?
It means no signs of editing were found in that file. It does not confirm that Capitec issued it, which is what the SkyQR check is for. An unsigned PDF can never be confirmed authentic by a file check alone.
